Where is the Wildebeest Migration?

Every year, millions of wildlife enthusiasts flock to Africa to witness a spectacle like no other – the Great Wildebeest Migration. This migration is like a clockwork, with the wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles moving in large herds across the Serengeti Plains and the Mara River. It’s no wonder then that the Wildebeest Migration is heralded as one of the most remarkable natural wonders of the world.

Tracking the Wildebeest Migration

The Wildebeest Migration is an annual event, with the herds of wildebeests and other animals moving in a clockwise direction between Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park and Kenya’s Maasai Mara Reserve. This incredible journey can take up to eight months, depending on the year’s rainfall patterns.

The migration starts around June or July, when the wildebeests and other animals move from the southern plains of the Serengeti to the north. They continue on their journey, crossing the Mara River and reaching the Maasai Mara Reserve in July or August. From there, the herds move west and return to the Serengeti in November or December.

This event is so predictable that wildlife enthusiasts can track the migration easily. By following the wildebeests’ movements, they can easily plan their safari trips to ensure they don’t miss witnessing this event in person.

Exploring the Serengeti Plains

The Serengeti National Park is one of the most popular destinations to witness the Wildebeest Migration in person. This vast wilderness spans an area of almost 15,000 square kilometers and is home to millions of animals. It’s one of the best places for viewing the ‘Big Five’ – the lion, elephant, leopard, rhinoceros, and African buffalo.

The Serengeti Plains are also known for their diverse landscapes. From the thick jungle woodlands to the rolling grasslands, the terrain is varied and the views are stunning. Whether you’re on a safari tour or just taking in the scenery, the Serengeti Plains offer a unique experience that you won’t find anywhere else.

Wildlife enthusiasts can also witness the Wildebeest Migration in Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. This large reserve is almost three times the size of the Serengeti and is home to many of the same species found in the Serengeti. Here, you can find all the ‘Big Five’ and watch the wildebeests and other animals crossing the Mara River on their journey.

The Wildebeest Migration is an incredible event that attracts millions of wildlife enthusiasts from all over the world. Whether you’re exploring the Serengeti Plains or the Mara River, you can be sure to catch a glimpse of this remarkable natural wonder. So what are you waiting for? Start planning your trip to Africa and join in on the fun!
