The mountain’s diverse environment is made up of five different ecological zones, ranging from the tropical savannah at the base to the icy glaciers of the summit. With each level comes different wildlife, allowing you to travel through diverse ecosystems in a single day. From elephants, buffalo, and antelope in the grasslands, to the colourful birds of the rainforest, to the elusive leopard living in the alpine heath, you’ll be amazed at the diversity of fauna you can encounter.
The Kilimanjaro region is also home to some of the most remarkable butterfly and moth species. Scientists have identified more than 600 species of butterfly and moth, making it one of the most biodiverse butterfly hotspots in the world. With its unique topography, Kilimanjaro offers the perfect environment for many species, hosting some that are found nowhere else on Earth.
The wildlife of Kilimanjaro offers one of the most beautiful natural spectacles in the world. If you’re lucky, you might be able to spot some of the rare and protected species like the bush elephant, the black rhinoceros, or the endangered Abbot’s duiker.
Wildlife on Kilimanjaro
Kilimanjaro is home to a rich array of wildlife. Some of the most common animals you’ll find in the park include the Thomson’s gazelle, the Grant’s gazelle, the waterbuck, the Cape buffalo, the warthog, and the klipspringer. Other common species include the red duiker, the baboon, and the side-striped jackal.
Reptiles, amphibians, and birds are also abundant in the region. You’ll find a variety of snakes, chameleons, and geckos, as well as hundreds of bird species. Among the most notable are the giant eagle owl, the Ross’s turaco, the mountain buzzard, and the augur buzzard.
The Kilimanjaro region is also home to a number of primates, including the black and white colobus monkey, the blue monkey, and the Sykes’s monkey. You may even be lucky enough to spot the extremely rare golden monkey, an endangered species with a small population in the park.
